MothPantry moths, also known as Indian meal moths, most commonly live in areas where food is stored. These small (3/8-1/2’’) insects with 5/8’’ wingspan love to feed off flours, grains, and cereals. They are often brought into homes by damaged food bags and boxes. These flying insects have oval, elongated bodies with grey wings, marked with brown, black, and tan patterns. They will infest your pantry and can lay up to 400 eggs at a time. Once hatched and in the larval stage they will begin to chew on whatever they can, damaging food. The larvae are off-white, to a pinkish brown with a worm-like body. If any larvae are found in food, throw it out, seal the bag, and take outside.

  • What can I do to prevent a pantry moth infestation?
The best way to prevent a moth infestation is to first look over all bags and boxes while grocery shopping. Any damaged or opened food should not be purchased. Do not purchase expired goods and throw out any food past the recommended shelf life. Once dried goods are opened in your home, you want to store them in air-tight containers, this includes pet food as well. If you cannot resolve the problem or infestation yourself, Critter Ridders can assist you in exterminating these pests.
